The Best Face Washes

February 20, 2011 5:31 pm / 1 Comment / theshoppingfriend

Do I have anything on my face?

It’s important to keep your face clean (to keep pores clear and breakout causing bacteria at bay), but you don’t want to use something that’s going to strip your face of it’s natural oils. That would just prematurely age your skin and no one wants that. I wash my face twice a day, once in the morning when I shower, and then before bed. I stress the importance of washing your face before bed, so the day’s oil buildup, grime, dust, and any other critters not visible to the naked eye that are camping out on your face, won’t clog pores, cause breakouts, or smear on your pillow. Ew. It gets easier and easier to have truly natural skin care nowadays, thanks to the growing abundance of companies who provide non-toxic products that are not tested on animals and don’t contain synthetic chemicals or animal ingredients. The trick to a good cleanser, too, is to use one that cleanses well enough to make your skin squeaky clean, but not so clean that it’s too drying or causes your skin to over-produce sebum in the effort to make up for the harsh stripping of the healthy oil on your face. There is a fine balance.

CLEANSING OILS Washing your face with oil? It certainly sounds like it shouldn’t work short of turning you into shiny grease ball…But it does! These cleansing oils are water soluble, so they’re supposed to wash off cleanly with water. Certain skin types really flourish using The Oil Cleansing Method (OCM) while others can suffer breakouts. Do some research on the oil cleansing method before trying it. If you happen to have skin that works well with it, it’s fantastic at slowing down the aging of your skin because it doesn’t strip your skin. I combine cleansing oils with another cleanser because I break out with the cleansing oil alone. Cleansing oils are a surprisingly effective cleanser, makeup remover and work better than regular oil alone (like olive, jojoba, or coconut) at removing makeup. I know it’s a hard concept, at first, to wrap your brain around – using oil to cleanse your face of oil. If you really think about it, though, it makes sense. Many cleansers use some kind of detergent that strips your skin of dirt and oils. Oil cleansers, however, are great at gripping onto that dirt, while leaving your natural oils intact, and then washing away easily because they are paired with ingredients that help wash them off your face. But be aware that cleansing oils can dry out those with sensitive skin and exacerbate dryness.

Boscia Makeup-Breakup Cool Cleansing Oil

PROS: Free of preservatives, parabens, sulfates, synthetic fragrances, synthetic dyes, pthalates, GMOs, triclosan. Ideal for all skin types, including sensitive skin. A silky, moisturizing, fresh, balancing, and luxurious cleansing. A little goes a long way, has a fresh smell, and leaves your skin soft. People with sensitive, acne-prone skin have claimed to have no issues whatsoever with this product. Great for the winter time. Has a nice, thick consistency that is very spreadable. Easily removes foundation, layers of heavy eye makeup, stubborn, waterproof mascara, and waterproof sunscreen, with no tugging, pulling, and very little effort. Shouldn’t cause breakouts on dry, breakout prone skin. Doesn’t sting when used on eyes. One user, with eczema around her eyes, said most facial cleansers and makeup removers really irritate her skin condition, but Boscia actually cleansed her itchy, dry skin and helped keep it moisturized while effortlessly removing all of her eye makeup. Feels wonderful going on, rinses off completely clean, leaves no film residue, and leaves your skin feeling cool and clean.

CONS: Some people have mentioned that it can make your eyes cloudy which only happens if you have contacts in your eyes when washing your face.  If wearing a full face of makeup(foundation, powder, blush, full eye, etc) two pumps are needed. For simple eye makeup and a powdered face one pump is enough. Some people think it doesn’t foam up and rinse off very well when you add water so you’re left with a bit of oil on your face. Which is fine for me because I wash my face after removing my makeup anyway, but this might not work for others. EWG RATING: Not available but other Boscia products rate between 1-4

DHC Deep Cleansing Oil

PROS: This water-soluble oil cleanser is my favorite. It’s the one I currently use to take off eye makeup. It doesn’t irritate my eyes and washes off super clean without drying. It’s light and very effective at gently cleaning off makeup without tugging, pulling, or rubbing. I don’t use it all over my face because it puts me at risk for breakouts. But people who don’t have acne prone skin like me love this for all over their face. For some, this makes face washing a one-step, quick process. Personally, I recommend using this as a makeup remover and then using a gentle cleanser after. Leaves skin smooth, pores less noticeable, and will dissolve anything off your face (makeup, moisturizer, sunscreens,…etc.) while leaving it soft, silky, and not at all oily. Can help soften oily plugs/blackheads making them easier to remove. A great, deep cleanser that offers a luxurious cleansing experience – it feels like a light facial massage as you work it into your skin. Apply it with dry hands to your dry face, rub in the oil, and then rinse with water. Truly liquid gold in a bottle. This has a very strong and loyal following of users.

CONS: Have to order it. Its not in any stores around me and I live in Los Angeles and New York where there is an abundance of stores. Not the most inexpensive cleanser, but definitely well worth the cost and lasts a long time. I have noticed a small number of people saying this is drying for their skin or has caused breakouts. It’s a small percentage of users who have these complaints though.  Texture wise, DHC’s about the same as Fancl, but some don’t quite like the strong floral scent in DHC. EWG RATING: not available but other DHC products rate at 3

Nude Skincare Cleansing Facial Oil

PROS: A remarkable cleanser that effectively removes stubborn make-up (including smokey eyes). Many celebrities are quoted on using this as cleanser and an eye-makeup remover. Omega 3 and Vitamin E deeply cleanse and nourish resulting in soft skin. The liquid is clear and the scent is quite light and floral. A fairly gentle cleansing oil. Great for those with dry or sensitive skin who find that other cleansing oils are a bit much for their skin. For normal to dry skin. It works like a normal cleansing oil – you work it into dry skin and rinse it off – it will turn into a milky emulsion.  Like the fact that its one of the most responsibly packaged beauty products on the market – with an entirely recyclable plastic bottle that uses 100% Post Consumer Regrind (PCR). One user claims that they’ve been using this for a month now and the oily parts of their face have greatly improved and have much less noticeable shine and leaves their face clean, conditioned and soft. It shouldn’t dry out your skin and many have said their acne cleared with this facial oil.

CONS: Some think this oil cleanser doesn’t rinse clean enough. Should work well for people with very dry skin, who are not prone to breakouts. Cleanser leaves me with a film of oil on my skin that won’t work for some, but I always follow oil cleansing with another cleanser, so its fine. One user complained that it didn’t even manage to shift her make-up, let alone keep her pores clean. She said after three days of use, her skin got so congested that she broke out in cystic spots. EWG RATING: not available but other Nude products range from 1-4

The Best Reusable Shopping Bags

February 10, 2011 10:09 am / 1 Comment / theshoppingfriend
canvas-grocery-bag

With recent news that many of our reusable shopping bags that we place our food in and handle daily or weekly are actually toxic with that great lead paint that China is so well known for, it’s hard to know what to do anymore! We’re doing our best and using these bags so we can be eco-friendly and help save the planet from unnecessary waste, only to discover that these bags are laced with lead – some with enough lead to be considered hazardous waste if disposed in household trash. Tests showed that the lead appears in a form that doesn’t easily leach out – presenting minimal harm to food when bags are new. But over time, the toxic heavy metal CAN eventually leach out, and also seep into the ground when bags break down in landfills. Yeah. Doesn’t sound all that earth friendly to me.

Not only are many of these bags tainted with lead but they are made with 100% non-woven polypropylene. Not canvas, burlap, or cotton, like most people think, but polypropylene. Polypropylene cannot be recycled. It is not environmentally friendly. It is not cost effective. It is just another plastic, like polythene or plastic bags. Aside from the fact that it’s reusable until it gets completely filthy (you can’t wash these by the way. The instructions say to “wipe” clean), all the main concerns we have surrounding plastic bags remain the same for these non-woven plastic bags. Recent investigations have also discovered that the bags can also breed bacteria and cause illness. Yum. Just what we want for our food shopping bags that can’t be washed.

Here are my recommendations for bags that are good for our food, our health, and our planet. AND they’re cheap! Party! You can use these totes for regular shopping as well, not just for groceries! Who says you can’t put your new GAP sweater and jeans in a reusable tote? Rock it.

Cotton Canvas Tote Bags – it speaks for itself. These natural, original fibers that our parents and grandparents used to use, before everything in this generation turned it into plastic, unauthentic crap, is the type of product we all need to go back to. You can wash these bags in the laundry, use them for years, and if they eventually make it into a landfill, they will eventually break down without leaching toxins into our soil and streams.

Burlap Shopping Bags – Burlap is an organic, biodegradable, reusable, recyclable, and incredibly durable material by its very nature. It’s one of the strongest natural fibers and is perfect for a reusable shopping bag.

Jute Burlap Shopping Bags – This bag is a very green option at an affordable price. Jute Burlap is made from the Jute plant, which absorbs more CO2 than a tree. AmeriGreenBag sells these and other types of bags at their website.

Best Deodorants

February 10, 2011 9:56 am / 6 Comments / theshoppingfriend
body-odor

How ripe are those babies?

As always, I like products that are more organic and toxic-free because I believe the health of our bodies adds to our beauty. The deodorants listed here have minimal to no toxic chemicals with maximum effectiveness. There is much debate about aluminum in antiperspirants. Antiperspirants rely on various forms of aluminum salts to block and dry out sweat. Since it’s known that aluminum is a potent neurotoxin and has been linked in some studies to an increased risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease and breast cancer, I figure, better safe than sorry. Sorry anti-perspirants, you’ve been banned from the list. Keep in mind, that with these recommendations, you will sweat, because deodorants don’t block perspiration, just BO. Some deodorants can help reduce sweat though.

These are in no particular order since each product works differently with each individual’s unique body makeup. Also, bear in mind that even though a product is labeled unscented or fragrance-free, it doesn’t necessarily mean that it contains no fragrance chemicals. Manufacturers often add masking chemicals to cover the scent of other chemicals in the product, resulting in a product that does not produce a detectable scent.

Erbaviva Organic Deodorant – This natural deodorant works very well. It has a light, fresh, and clean scent and dries quickly with no residue. It’s good for people with a sensitivity to fragrances. One of the longest lasting deodorants I’ve found. Many people say it lasts all day or more for them, reduces their sweat, and successfully keeps odor away. It is very light and doesn’t feel like you’re wearing anything. It’s non-irritating to the skin. Pure Complexions makes this great deodorant and offers great customer service. Since it is a natural formula, know that the thickness varies from batch to batch. Thicker formulas can impede the “rolling mechanism”. To bypass this problem – turn the deodorant upside down and squeeze until you see the deodorant ooze around the sides of the roller – then use accordingly for a week or two until it starts behaving. Great for odor and wetness control. More effective than most brands, mainstream or natural.

Buy Erbaviva Now!

Lavanila – This is a great product with many fans. It has a fresh and clean smelling scent, not too vanilla-y, and is great with keeping odor at bay. It also has moisturizing properties that smooth and soften the skin and a nice texture that is not sticky. Depending on your individual body chemistry, it easily lasts 4-6 hours, without reapplication, but you probably would need to reapply at least once a day. The down side of this product is it’s cost, it has a slightly higher price tag than most deodorants. Another not so good thing is that one of the main ingredients in The Healthy Deodorant is propanediol, which is a petrochemical used in the production of plastics and antifreeze, like propylene glycol. This is not a non-toxic deodorant, but it’s cleaner than most mainstream deodorants.

Buy Lavanila Now!

Miessence Organics – Imagine an explosion of fresh tropical juices and fresh, clean mint merging to create fresh, tropical, nirvana under your arms. This fresh, citrus/herbal cocktail deodorant works very well and boasts a large customer following. Created by an Australian company called ONE Group, who creates 100% natural personal care products, with a strong emphasis on organic ingredients, this is an affordable natural deodorant that truly holds up. It is completely natural, with 89% of those ingredients being organic! There are 3 fragrances to choose from: Tahitian Breeze, Ancient Spice, and Aroma-Free. Tahitian scent is a mild citrus, patchouli/floral and Ancient Spice is spicy/citrus. Comes is a Recyclable #1 plastic bottle.

Buy Miessence Organics Now!

Bubble & Bee Pit Putty & Deodorant – PROS: This organic natural deodorant is one of the very few on the market that actually works under almost any conditions. Running, sweltering, humid apartments, first date…It doesn’t have the most marketable name, but this deodorant has a nice, clean fragrance that is pretty uplifting. They do offer a spray, but it’s not as strong and effective as the putty. Both, however, smell delightful. The scent is more citrus than floral, being made from lemon, cloves, and coconut, is very refreshing, and is great for either men or women. Very effective with wetness control as well. CONS: Be aware that it is thick and white, must be applied immediately after your shower, and you have to massage it into your arm pit or else it will crumble and end up all over your clothes. If you have the patience, it’s worth trying.

Buy Bubble & Bee Pit Putty Now!

264 Dr. Hauschka – This deodorant is gentle and effective. If you aren’t accustomed to a roll-on you might find the initial application slightly cool and “wet” (which, of course, it is!), but it really takes care of business. This product is fabulous, effective, long lasting, and healthy for you. A great deodorant but it has a few cons: it’s too expensive and not enough product in the container. Comes in a recyclable glass bottle.

Buy Dr. Hauschka Now!

280 Weleda Citrus Deodorant – A very nice and natural deodorant. It has a higher price point but it lasts a long time. Both the Rose and the Citrus scents are popular, but the citrus is lovely and fresh and a little milder with a very nice authentic smell. Plus, for some, it dries to fragrance free. I’ve heard the sage is a little remniscent of cooking a turkey, so you’ll probably want to stick with Rose or Citrus. You can also use it as an all over body spray. The deodorant lasts about half a day to a full day, depending, and probably requires one re-application a day for most people. The main ingredient is alcohol, so some have experienced a slight sting when applying right after shaving. Many think the re-application is worth it for this deodorant’s benefits.

Buy Weleda Now!

Lafe’s Natural and Organic Deodorant Spray – Application can be a little tricky at first, but this spray-on deodorant is effective and once you become used to application, it goes on well. There is no skin irritation associated with this spray, even right after shaving. It’s long-lasting, can improve the condition of your skin, and is great for people with sensitive skin.

Buy Lafe’s Now!

Burt’s Bees Herbal Deodorant Spray – This herbal blend mixes sage, lemon, and lavender with a fresh scent which is not really gender specific, but I think the scent seems a little more masculine. It fades after a few minutes though, so it’s not really a big deal and many women love it. The sage smell is definitely a hit or miss for some people. Will probably require reapplication once a day. Ladies should wait a few minutes after shaving to apply, it stings if you dont let the pores close up because of the alcohol. Apply 2-3 sprays when applying.

Buy Burt’s Bees Now!

Click to enlarge... Terressentials Roll On Deodorant – This deodorant has a great citrus smell, good consistency to the roll-on, and maintains it’s scent for several hours. It won’t leave any white marks unless you apply a generous amount, but it’s basically just the baking soda in it and will wash out easily. The baking soda helps absorb moisture, but it can be uncomfortable on irritated skin. The packaging is great – you can actually use up ALL of the product, however, it’s a little more costly for the small amount that you get.

Buy Terressentials Now!

Arm & Hammer Arm and Hammer Essentials Natural Deodorant Arm & Hammer’s Essentials Natural Deodorant – This is the only deodorant in the list that has propylene glycol in it (which I’m not a big fan of). Many Natural Deodorant users try to stay away from that ingredient though. I included it because it is aluminum free and lasts all day without reapplication, but make sure you check the ingredients to be sure you’re okay with some of the chemicals in it. The ”Unscented” version has a fresh, clean smell while the “Fresh” version actually smells more masculine to me. This is a great solid that goes on clear, doesn’t rub off, and never shows on clothes. The scent is subtle and clean.

The Best Shampoos

February 10, 2011 9:46 am / 19 Comments / theshoppingfriend
Shampooingtips1

Ahhhh...if only washing our hair was so peaceful and CLEAN. With these shampoos it can be!

I know you’re thinking that it’s just hair. It’s dead. Who cares if there are some toxic ingredients in it, hair can’t absorb it and we’re washing it out anyway. Nope, sorry. Wrong again. This is not the area to be lax with our health awareness. Your hair isn’t the main concern, it’s the porous, spongy layers of your scalp that are the most sensitive and absorbent part of the body. Products applied to the scalp go directly into the blood, without any filtering. Actually, the same goes for any product we put anywhere on our skin, because unlike food, which gets filtered by our liver, ingredients from skincare products and cosmetics go directly into our bloodstream. But our scalps are the most susceptible to sucking in what’s put on it.

Shampoo is the most popular of hair products and most have a pretty standard formula: water, emollients, preservatives, and the most important ingredient: detergent. Many commercial shampoos contain ingredients that are known or suspected of causing cancer, affect the nervous system, trigger asthma or allergies, and have other harmful effects. Detergents, like sodium lauryl sulfate and sodium laureth sulfate, lather up and work very well to remove dirt and oils from our hair. It’s effective, but as we are finding out, not the safest or best solution. The sudsing action so many of us love in our shampoos is not naturally occurring in nature and is actually added because somehow we got it in our heads that it makes our hair cleaner. But it actually doesn’t.

At the very least, these detergent ingredients strip the natural oils from your hair and scalp, making your scalp more absorbent to bad stuff like synthetic chemicals, all the while leaving your hair feeling dry. It can also be very irritating to the scalp. Often to compensate for drying the hair other chemical ingredients are added to coat the hair and make it feel less dry and conditioned. New safer, milder detergents like decoyl glucoside may be used. This is a plant derived, safer, biodegradable, effective, but more expensive, solution that can be found in some organic shampoos.

So here are the cleaner, more non-toxic shampoo choices that go into Michelle’s Shopping Bag (in no particular order)!

Desert Essence Organics Shampoo – PROS: Has a very effective line of hair products for all different hair types. Love all the flavors: grape, raspberry, apple ginger, coconut, they all smell incredibly delicious and leave my hair smelling clean, fresh, and edible. I, unfortunately, can’t use all of them because they’re not all for my hair type. Some can really tangle my hair. So make sure you buy what’s right for your hair condition. A small amount goes a long way making it very economical. It has a gel-like consistency but it’s smoother and not as thick as sulfate shampoos. CONS: Some find the fragrance too strong and not authentic. Depending on your hair type, it can be drying if you choose the wrong formula. EWG SCORE:3-4

Buy Desert Essence Organics Shampoo Now!

John Masters Organics Shampoo – PROS: He is a pioneer and leader in organic hair care and has a pretty great reputation for most of his products. He says that daily shampooing is not essential and that we have to be gentle with our hair. His Zinc & Sage Shampoo with Conditioner is great for people with sensitive scalps. It uses a mild, naturally derived surfactant. Very cleansing for hair and scalp without being drying. Plenty of ingredients that enhance your hair with essential oils that smell divine. CONS: Not totally organic but made with safer ingredients. EWG SCORE: 3

Buy John Masters Organics Shampoo Now!

Burt’s Bees Shampoo – PROS: The More Moisture Raspberry & Brazil Nut formula smells heavenly and is probably the most moisturizing formula in this brand of shampoos. The other formulas smell great, too, but are definitely for people with oily hair. Cleanses well with a soapy foam that comes from a natural surfactant and not a sulfate. Rich in natural omega-3 essential fatty acids, honey, soy protein, and a bunch of plant oils. Improves hair health and is gentle. Cleans well and is good if you have oily hair. Preservative free. CONS: Not good for people with dry hair because it’s not very moisturizing and can leave hair tangled and limp. Doesn’t have much lather, which is fine, since most non-toxic shampoos don’t lather. EWG SCORE: 0-5

Buy Burt’s Bees Shampoo Now!

Kiss My Face Shampoo – PROS: Gentle. Good for sensitive scalps. The Whenever Shampoo seems to be the most popular of the formulas. Bursting with flower waters, wheat protein, and plant extracts and infusions. No added toxic fragrance. Uses natural preservatives like Vitamin E and citric acid. Has a light, clean scent and leaves hair soft and shiny. It’s also been known to help people eliminate their dandruff and itchy scalp dilemmas. You can go 2-3 days (if you’re not sweating or exercising profusely) without washing and hair still feels silky and clean. It does lather up pretty well, but there’s a “not good” reason for that. See CONS: Has mild petroleum derived surfactants, so beware if you’re sensitive to those ingredients, and beware even if you’re not sensitive. Also, you have to use a little more product than with traditional shampoos. EWG SCORE: 3-5

Buy Kiss My Face Shampoo Now!

Aubrey Organics Shampoo – PROS: A totally clean shampoo that is great for any type of hair. Aubrey never has added fragrances or synthetic preservatives. Because of the natural ingredients, remember to shake it before you use it because it can settle sometimes. Free of Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Parabens, and Petrochemicals. The Island Naturals Shampoo and Honeysuckle Rose Moisturizing Shampoo are great with a coconut and corn soap base and tons of plant extracts that add to the health of your hair. It also has a lovely, soft scent. Be aware that there is only a little lather but it does not contain sulfates, which is good. Cleanses very effectively and leaves hair silky soft. Pantene converters have said this leaves their hair shiny, bouncy and healthy looking like Pantene used to. CONS: Island Naturals and Honeysuckle Rose have good fragrances but some of the others don’t smell as good to me as these but they work just as well. There are some who think the Rose fragrance is too floral and strong, but love the results from the product enough to not care about the scent. EWG SCORE: 2-3

Buy Aubrey Organics Shampoo Now!

Eco Bella Shampoo – PROS: Smells like candy. The Vanilla Moisturizing flavor is a favorite, although, be sure you really like vanilla scents. Eco Bella changed the shampoo formula in order to apply for organic certification. They eliminated the parabens and upgraded the surfactants (cleansing agents) to meet Whole Foods Premium standards – they are a premium brand. They replaced the water with organic aloe vera. The formula has a finer, denser but less copious foam, and is slightly thinner than the old formula. It is still a thick, moisturizing shampoo, though, and effectively maintains moisture in dry hair. A little goes a long way and it lathers up pretty well. Some people don’t even have to use conditioner with this shampoo and it leaves their hair silky and shiny without being greasy. CONS: Some say the scent is too strong and has a slight fake vanilla smell to it. Eco Bella uses real vanilla, which others love, so be sure you’re a vanilla fragrance person. I’ve heard some say that one or two ingredients have caused irritation, so make sure to check the ingredients to be sure they all agree with you. For some hair types, it can weigh hair down and not feel clean after using it. More effective for dry hair. EWG SCORE: not available

Buy Eco Bella Shampoo Now!

Surya Shampoo – PROS: A beautiful line of hair products. This Brazilian company’s line of shampoos is imbibed with Brazilian Rain Forest plants, essential oils and vegetal oils rich in nutrients that help in the regeneration of hair and in the restoration of natural fat required to keep hair healthy and full of luster. It has minimal lather, cleans effectively, and leaves hair soft and natural looking, without frizz. Has five different formulas, each pretty gentle, that contains essential oil from the bark of the Preciosa tree that provides a unique experience that doesn’t occur with other plants in nature: its natural fragrance is incapable of being reproduced even in the most sophisticated laboratories. The five choices are: Ucuuba & Vegetal Protein for curly and fragile hair, Brazil Nut & Vegetal Protein for dry and damaged hair, Cupuaçu & Vegetal Protein for normal and straight hair. Buriti & Vegetal Protein for dyed and damaged hair, and Murumuru & Vegetal Protein for oily hair. I love that the company is in a special cooperative venture that supports the mandatory sustainable harvesting of all Brazilian raw materials. This relationship with the Amazon residents preserves not only the forests but also the survival of its inhabitants who make their living collecting in a sustainable manner.CONS: The only downside is it doesn’t leave hair as shiny as some other brands. EWG SCORE: 2-3

Nature’s Paradise Organics Shampoo – PROS: The first shampoo ever to bear the USDA Organic seal. Few chemicals. Absolutely 100% Sulfate free, Paraben Free, no harsh ingredients and Yes it is VEGAN and all are Gluten Free. Provides 3 formulas for thickening, moisturizing, or relaxing. Read the ingredient list, it’ll feel like you’re reading a recipe, which I love. THAT’S how products should be. These are great, organic hair care products that clean and condition your hair at reasonable prices.CONS: Not much I don’t like about this shampoo. EWG SCORE: 0-1

Organic Lemon Shampoo Bubble and Bee Shampoo – PROS: This natural shampoo works well and can strip the build up caused by chemical shampoos and conditioners and, once again, let your scalp produce natural oils. After a few weeks, your hair will be noticeably stronger and softer. A quarter-sized drop is enough to suds and clean my middle of the back, very long and very thick hair. The zesty lemon essential oil is a refreshing, clean scent. The olive and coconut oils rebuild and strengthen hair and prevents your scalp from being dry. CONS: A vinegar rinse replaces your conditioner, which is a very humbling smell and seems quite potent when hair is wet. Also, your hair will go through a “detox” period that can last for a few weeks and will really not be looking it’s best and could feel very oily. EWG SCORE: 0-2

Buy Bubble & Bee Shampoo now!

Terressentials Shampoo – PROS: 100% natural, chemical-free hair cleansing. One of the first companies to offer USDA skin and hair care products created this organic shampoo that uses clay to clean. Yep, you read that right. Clay. Believe me, you will need a little bit of faith to rub mud into your hair thinking it will do it good. But it does. They use pure, simple ingredients that gently work without coating your hair. Very safe to use even for those with sensitive scalps. Leaves your hair incredibly soft. CONS: They warn that hair that has been shampooed with conventional shampoo or color treated will go through a detox period where all the chemicals that the hair has absorbed will be removed. You may go through a period of time where your hair is not at it’s best. Make sure to read the instructions before buying this product so you know what to expect. EWG SCORE: 0-2

Colorflage Daily Color Defense Shampoos by Giovanni– I did feel the need to include a line of shampoos specifically for people who struggle with giving up their toxic hair color treatments and want a shampoo that won’t ruin their costly addiction. PROS: This line is better than other paraben, phthalate, sulfate filled shampoos and it protects from color fading along with boasting effective cleansing power and keeping hair soft. This line is great for making grays much less noticeable and is better than dyes or henna if you just have a few grays to cover. It lathers well, and leaves hair clean and manageable. There’s a pretty general consensus that it leaves hair shiny and smooth, and dyed hair color lasts longer. Smells great, not overly scented but subtly sensual, perfect consistency, and a little goes a long way. CONS: Ok so this stuff doesn’t have the most heavenly of ingredients, it contains polysorbate-60, fragrance, acrylates copolymer, and a number of other questionable elements. EWG SCORE: not available for this line, but other shampoos from Giovanni range from 2-5

Organic Grapefruit and Cardamom Dry Shampoo Skinny Skinny Organic Dry Shampoo – Dry shampoo has been around for awhile but Skinny Skinny has made it pretty amazing. PROS: The company claims you can go up to 3 days without washing your hair with this formula and still have it look healthy and not oily. They say we shouldn’t wash our hair as often as we do because it’s damaging, wasteful of our resources, and time consuming. The powder soaks up any oil and hair looks as good, if not better, than when freshly washed and blown, even people with oily hair. The scents are lovely, mild, and fresh and you smell like you just showered. It’s like perfume for your hair. They are pretty easy to use and a little goes a long way. These shampoos also give your hair an awesome texture that doesn’t require as much styling products to have volume. All of the packaging is made from recycled or biodegradable materials and the shampoos contain certified organic ingredients and are 100 percent vegan. CONS: The powder is a little messy to use at first, so be careful when opening the product and watch out for fallen powder on clothes. Be careful how much you use, too, and make sure to comb your hair thoroughly, otherwise you’ll be walking around with a Founding Fathers’ white wig do. You may want to use it in an area that is easy to sweep up too, as some powder could fly about. If you want to take a break between shampoos, though, this is a great product to check out. EWG SCORE: not available but my guess is that it’s probably somewhere under a 3

The Best Shampoos

November 23, 2010 2:29 am / Leave a Comment / theshoppingfriend

Nature’s Paradise Organics Shampoo – PROS: The first shampoo ever to bear the USDA Organic seal.   chemicals.

Organic Lemon ShampooBubble and Bee Shampoo – PROS: This natural shampoo works well and can strip the build up caused by chemical shampoos and conditioners and, once again, let your scalp produce natural oils.

Colorflage Daily Color Defense Shampoos by Giovanni- I did feel the need to include a line of shampoos specifically for people who struggle with giving up their toxic hair color treatments and want a shampoo that won’t ruin their costly addiction.

Organic Grapefruit and Cardamom Dry ShampooSkinny Skinny Organic Dry Shampoo – Dry shampoo has been around for awhile but Skinny Skinny has made it pretty amazing.

Morrocco Method – PROS: Raw, Vegan, and Eco-friendly. Helps with any sensitive or dry scalp problems. Leaves hair incredibly soft, shiny, pretty, and silky. Very healthy for hair and body. CONS: Main complaints are minimal lather, it’s not the cheapest, and some people don’t like the earthy smell.  EWG SCORE: 0-1

The Best Reusable Shopping Bags

November 16, 2010 1:12 pm / 1 Comment / theshoppingfriend

The Best Deodorants

November 14, 2010 2:35 am / Leave a Comment / theshoppingfriend

2645. Dr.

2806. Weleda Citrus Deodorant – A very nice and natural deodorant.

Click to enlarge... 9.

Arm & Hammer Arm and Hammer Essentials Natural Deodorant 10. Arm & Hammer’s Essentials Natural Deodorant – This is the only deodorant in the list that has propylene glycol  in it (which I’m not a big fan of). Many Natural Deodorant users try to stay away from that ingredient though. I included it because it is aluminum free and lasts all day without reapplication, but make sure you check the ingredients to be sure you’re okay with some of the chemicals in it. The “Unscented” version has a fresh, clean smell while the “Fresh” version actually smells more masculine to me. This is a great solid that goes on clear, doesn’t rub off, and never shows on clothes. The scent is subtle and clean.
